When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the European Union in March to put Ukraine on a fast track for membership, he received polite words — but no immediate welcome. Zelensky conceded this week that there was “no open door” to NATO, either.

He isn’t the first Ukrainian leader to feel frustrated — in 2011, another Ukrainian president, Viktor Yanukovych, expressed frustration that E.U. officials had postponed yet another high-level meeting. Complaining that he was “irritated by how [he] was being treated in Brussels … Europe will not help us”, Yanukovych a few hours later signed an economic agreement that aimed to bring Ukraine closer to Russia.…  Seguir leyendo »

Each week seems to bring bad news for international cooperation. The United States regularly threatens to exit or renegotiate many of the international pacts that political elites consider foundational to international trade, as with NAFTA and the TPP; security, as with the recent Iran deal; and the environment, as with the Paris climate accord.

And that’s just the United States. In the European Union, arguably the most successful modern example of cross-border cooperation, Britain is heading for the door; other countries (including Hungary or Poland) flout the democratic, liberal principles on which the organization was founded; and the euro is under threat.…  Seguir leyendo »
