La marcha por la justicia

El 15 de junio inicié una marcha por la justicia,de Ankara a Estambul.

¿Por qué?

Mi único propósito en este viaje de 450 kilómetros es buscar la justicia.

Me preguntan: “¿Se puede buscar la justicia en la calle?”. Por supuesto que sí. Si en tu país existen grandes injusticias e ilegalidades y los tribunales no cumplen con su labor hay que alzarse y emprender el camino, que es exactamente lo que estoy haciendo ahora.

Ese es mi único lema: Justicia.

On June 15, I began walking from Ankara to Istanbul on a 280-mile march for democracy, justice and freedom from fear and authoritarian rule in Turkey. I am the leader of the Republican People’s Party, or C.H.P., the main opposition party in the Turkish Parliament. I set out with thousands of supporters from Ankara.

As we walked through punishingly hot afternoons and plodded on through rain for the past three weeks, tens of thousands of Turkish citizens of varying political persuasions representing the diversity of our country joined us. Many in Washington have been debating whether Turkey’s governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) could be a model for the Arab Spring , as our neighbors in the Middle East aspire to get rid of totalitarian regimes and become true democracies. But the reality in Turkey makes clear that the AKP model does not hold.

On Nov. 9 I visited the Silivri prison where hundreds of journalists, publishers, military officers, academics and politicians are being held. Trials were opened in 2007 on charges that an ultranationalist underground organization had plotted for years to overthrow the government.
