The already off-the-rails Princess of Wales controversy has veered off in an unexpected direction. In recent days, the debate has shifted from wild speculation over the princess’s whereabouts to a moral panic about the British royal family’s apparent history of doctoring photos presented to the public as candids.

The photo-doctoring controversy has provided a pretext for more legitimate media outlets, including this one, to weigh in on the great Kate debate, but it’s hard to shake the feeling that it is just that — a pretext.

So, Kate touches up her photos. Who doesn’t these days? The real underlying issue is whether it is legitimate for the royal family to assert a right to privacy and to keep crucial details about the princess’s health from the public.…  Seguir leyendo »

Britain’s Conservative Party, which has weathered the resignation of two prime ministers since December 2019, cannot remain in government for another two years without calling a general election.

Well, technically, they could. But that doesn’t mean they should.

Under British law, as long as a party can command a parliamentary majority, it can continue in power for up to five years before calling an election.

And the Conservative Party, despite having suffered a series of recent by-election defeats, still maintains a working parliamentary majority of 71, meaning that Britain’s next general election could conceivably come as late as January 2025.

On Monday, Rishi Sunak, Boris Johnson’s former finance minister, won the contest to become the next leader of the Conservative Party and will become prime minister of Britain.…  Seguir leyendo »

This week, Liz Truss became Britain's third female prime minister. Feminists in the United Kingdom and beyond -- even those who disagree with Truss's policies -- will likely appreciate her appointment for the message it sends: There is no longer a "glass ceiling" within British politics.

Truss, however, is not known for her embrace of gender solidarity. Like Britain's first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, Truss's loyalties appear to lie first and foremost with her party, not her sex.

Her lack of solidarity with other female politicians was on display this past month, when Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin was subjected to criticism after a video of her partying with friends surfaced on social media.…  Seguir leyendo »
