Mi-avril, un enregistrement audio a circulé sur les réseaux sociaux burundais. On y entend une personne décrite comme un officier supérieur de la police adresser un message effrayant aux opposants politiques du gouvernement : « Si tu veux perturber la sécurité, je vais en finir avec toi sur place, et si tu es avec ta femme et tes enfants, vous partirez ensemble. » Si elles sont authentiques, ces menaces à l’intention des membres du nouveau parti d’opposition du Burundi, le Congrès national pour la liberté (CNL), démontrent un mépris inquiétant de l’Etat de droit.

Quatre ans après qu’une crise des droits humains généralisée a démarré au Burundi, cette situation est en train de devenir la norme.…  Seguir leyendo »

Until recently, thousands of people escaping violence in the Central African Republic at least could find refuge in the capital, Bangui. I was one of them. I had been in the northern town of Bouca where a massacre of civilians sheltering in a church compound was narrowly averted by the arrival of African Union troops. And so I was grateful, days later, to reach the relative safety of Bangui.

Now the violence has reached the capital, which has become frighteningly dangerous. Roughly 350,000 people, about half the city’s population, have been displaced by sectarian fighting between the largely Muslim Seleka coalition, which took power in a March 2013 coup, and the anti-balaka (“anti-machete”) militias of the country’s majority Christians, backed by soldiers of the former government.…  Seguir leyendo »
