The term “spring” may suggest a gentle awakening, but what is happening in North Africa and the Middle East is a true revolution, fomented by a new, digitally-savvy generation. The Arab upheavals are a by-product of the inexorable process of globalization in the twenty-first century, with almost instantaneous communications and increasing contact with the West transforming social and economic expectations.

Only by fully understanding the demands and grievances of these Arab revolutionaries will the West be able to give the region appropriate support – and this support is critical. The Arab revolts have not been directed against the West – on the contrary, they have been fed by Western democratic principles and values – but they could yet produce a reactionary backlash.…  Seguir leyendo »

Después de haber estado 10 años al servicio de Reino Unido, y mientras que el mundo se entristece ya por verle abandonar el primer plano, usted acaba de aceptar una misión más compleja, más imposible incluso que todas aquellas a las que ha se ha consagrado hasta el momento. ¿Imposible? En efecto, la tarea desanimaría a más de uno.

A esta historia aparentemente interminable del conflicto entre Israel y los palestinos se suma hoy un puñado de factores hostiles: el abuso de autoridad de Hamás en Gaza, por supuesto; las dificultades políticas internas israelíes; la actitud indecisa de EE UU; la falta de convicción de Europa, a pesar de la meritoria acción de Javier Solana; y, sobre todo, ese terrible sentimiento de impotencia que parece haber hecho presa de toda la comunidad internacional.…  Seguir leyendo »
