Por el bien de los océanos, necesitamos mejores plásticos

El plástico es uno de los materiales favoritos de la actualidad. Cada año se usan en todo el mundo unos 320 millones de toneladas, lo cual no sorprende, dada su versatilidad. Y las fiestas de fin de año dejan a muchas personas con una montaña de productos y embalajes de plástico. Pero este material también plantea una amenaza ambiental grave.

Si no se lo elimina correctamente, el plástico puede permanecer en el suelo o flotar en el mar por décadas. Además de ser dañino para la vida terrestre y acuática, el plástico a la deriva en los océanos puede adsorber toxinas y fragmentarse en microplásticos, que luego entran a la cadena alimentaria.…  Seguir leyendo »

The decision by five Arab states to sever ties with Qatar marks another chapter in a multiyear saga of turbulent relations between Qatar and its neighbors. A split between Doha and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) was brewing for years. At the heart of the problem lies an irreconcilable difference between the Persian Gulf countries about how to interpret the events of the 2011 Arab Spring and, more important, how to react to them.

In contrast to its GCC neighbors, Qatar actively promoted regime change across the Arab world.
