“They have only one objective: to prevent the development of Russia. They are going to do it in the same way as they did it before, without furnishing even a single pretext, doing it just because we exist.”

These were Vladimir Putin’s words on 21 February, in his now notorious speech on Ukraine. They repeat the argument already formulated in his speech on Crimea in March 2014: “The politics of the containment of Russia, which continued throughout the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, continues today. Une Russie ramenée à l’Europe, tel est le pari tenté par Emmanuel Macron lors de sa rencontre, le 19 août au fort de Brégançon, avec le président russe Vladimir Poutine. Pari confirmé avec force lors du discours présidentiel à la Conférence des ambassadeurs, une semaine plus tard. On ne peut reprocher au président de la République son inconstance : déjà, en 2018, il annonçait son intention d’avancer sur ce terrain, évoquant les « erreurs et incompréhensions » qui, selon lui, avaient marqué les relations russo-occidentales depuis la fin de la guerre froide, et le besoin de « repenser l’architecture de sécurité » du continent, ainsi que de proposer un nouveau « partenariat stratégique » avec la Russie.…  Seguir leyendo »
