Quivering like a nervous gymnast on a beam, stumbling like a hurdler, sinking to the bottom like a diver, the IOC has squandered a golden opportunity to demonstrate its integrity to the world with its spineless decision not to ban Russia’s entire team from the Rio Olympics, which are to begin with opening ceremonies on August 5.

In so doing, these Games remain as mired in muck as much of the water off Rio’s coast.

Thomas Bach, a German lawyer who is president of the IOC, had described Russia’s blatant chicanery in a statement as “a shocking and unprecedented attack on the integrity of sport.” After a full report on how Russian officials found nefarious ways to circumvent Olympic doping regulations, cheating successfully in multiple sports, Bach also decried an “unprecedented level of criminality” and vowed that his organization would not hesitate to punish the guilty.…  Seguir leyendo »

Been thinking about wrestlers.

No, not about Hulk Hogan or Andre the Giant or The Rock. I mean real wrestlers. Wrestlers who wrestle for real.

Wrestlers who won’t wrestle in the 2020 Olympic Games if the International Olympic Committee drop kicks their sport. It was revealed Tuesday that the IOC is giving serious thought to the elimination of wrestling from Olympic competition.

Been thinking about Steve Fraser.

He was a deputy sheriff from Ann Arbor, Michigan, when I watched him in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics on the night he became the first American ever to win a medal in Greco-Roman wrestling.…  Seguir leyendo »
