Africa is at the sharp end of the global “polycrisis”: the converging effects of climate change, the pandemic and the Ukraine war. None is of its own making. And the polycrisis comes as more than 800m people on the continent struggle to get enough to eat. More than half of low-income countries in debt distress or at risk of it are African. The continent is also home to the ten countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, from storms to droughts and beyond–despite its low carbon emissions. Africa’s Past Is Not Its Future

Africa is a vast and abundant continent. Roughly ten times the size of India and three times the size of China, it is home to nearly 18 percent of the world’s population and roughly 30 percent of its mineral resources. With an average per capita GDP of just over $2,000, however, it remains the poorest continent by far. Of the 46 countries the United Nations has rated as the least developed, 35 are African. More than three-quarters of the continent’s population lives in countries where life expectancy, income, and education are well below the global mean. Europa y África están inextricablemente vinculadas por la historia, la geografía y la economía. Hoy, garantizar un futuro pacífico y próspero en cada uno de los dos continentes demanda la cooperación de ambos, pero no en una relación donante‑suplicante como la que definió la “cooperación” en el pasado. En vez de eso, las dirigencias de uno y otro lado deben construir una relación estratégica igualitaria que beneficie a Europa tanto como a África, y a África tanto como a Europa.

Las dirigencias africana y europea deben comenzar a sentar los cimientos de esa relación, acordando una estrategia con visión de futuro para resolver los desequilibrios estructurales, aprovechar el impacto positivo de las migraciones y proveer beneficios tangibles a la población, especialmente la que ha quedado rezagada o es particularmente vulnerable al cambio climático.…  Seguir leyendo »

Las imágenes comunes de África son las de un continente hundido en el conflicto y la miseria. Pero esa representación, basada en los regímenes más corruptos de África,es injusta - como lo es afirmar que todos los europeos son culpables de limpieza étnica por lo que sucedió en la antigua Yugoslavia. Sí, Áfricatiene algunos estados fallidos, pero la mayoría de sus cincuenta y tres países son lugares pacíficos y agradables.

El año pasado, el índice Ibrahim anual de gobernanza en Áfricamostró que esta ha mejorado en dos terceras partes de los países africanos. Además, si consideramos a políticos como Joaquim Chissano, el ex presidente de Mozambique, o Festus Mogae, el ex presidente de Botsuana, y a personas como Kofi Annan y Nelson Mandela, el calibre del liderazgo africano resulta evidente.…  Seguir leyendo »

Once when flying over Kenya I looked out of my window. The country was so lush, so green, I wondered how the people there could ever be hungry. Looking at the spaces, huge, endless spaces, animals, water; everything was there. I came to the conclusion that unless you are ruled properly, you cannot move forward. Everything else is second. Everything.

This was when I was still the chairman of Celtel International, the telecommunications company I founded less than 10 years ago. Celtel established a mobile phone network in Africa at a time when investors told me that there was no market for mobile phones there.…  Seguir leyendo »
