It was always just a matter of time before the smouldering conflict between Russia and Ukraine in the Sea of Azov, a body of water to the north-east of Crimea, escalated militarily. After it opened a bridge across the Kerch strait in May 2018, Russia has gradually brought the entire area under its control, causing severe economic damage to the Ukrainian trading ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk. A volatile situation morphed into an unprecedented, open act of aggression when on 25 November the Russian navy rammed a Ukrainian tugboat, seized three vessels and their crews and temporarily blocked passage through the strait.…  Seguir leyendo »

To Unify Europe, Face the Mideast as One

After the horror in Brussels, Europe is mourning once more. Rightly, the states of the European Union are also focused on bringing the perpetrators to justice and preventing a follow-up attack. Cooperating more effectively on counterterrorism while tightening security at airports and train stations would be a start.

But we must not lose sight of the bigger picture. The Islamic State’s goal in Brussels was to scare us and drive a wedge between us, and it seems to be succeeding. Here in Germany, and across the Continent, right-wing, anti-immigration parties are calling for their nations to turn inward, away from one another.…  Seguir leyendo »

Les efforts actuellement déployés par l’Europe pour sortir de la récession ne doivent pas nous faire oublier la question urgente du modèle économique que nous désirons construire.

Si nous ne faisons pas en sorte que la reprise économique mette nos pays sur la voie d’un modèle durable à faibles émissions de carbone, l’incertitude demeurera et nous devrons faire face aux coûts significatifs engendrés par la volatilité des prix de l’énergie et par un climat de plus en plus instable.

Pourtant, une formidable occasion s’offre à nous : celle du renforcement de notre propre reprise économique, de l’amélioration de notre sécurité énergétique et de la lutte contre le changement climatique par le développement des secteurs énergétiques à faibles émissions de carbone et de l’exploitation de nouvelles sources d’emplois et d’exportations.…  Seguir leyendo »
