En las votaciones del 1 de julio, los mexicanos eligieron por un amplio margen a Andrés Manuel López Obrador como su próximo presidente. AMLO, como se le conoce, ha sido tachado de populista, izquierdista, autoritario y nacionalista. No obstante, también se ha dicho que es un pragmático y un conservador en materia fiscal. ¿Quién es AMLO y qué tipo de presidente podría ser? Todas las anteriores son la respuesta correcta.

López Obrador es tanto un ideólogo de izquierda como un político pragmático. Favorece un mayor gasto social y también afirma ser un conservador fiscal. Defiende las elecciones como un demócrata comprometido, pero hace campaña como un populista, y tiene una vena autoritaria.…  Seguir leyendo »

Enrique Peña Nieto, the fresh-faced politician Mexicans elected this week to be their president, represents the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which completely dominated Mexican politics for 71 years until 2000. Many Mexicans are concerned that the PRI's return will lead to a restoration of autocratic rule, an officially sanctioned detente with organized crime or a marked deterioration in bilateral cooperation. But these things are unlikely.

Equally unlikely, however, is any kind of wide-ranging reform. For good or ill,Mexico'snew president will not have the power to transform Mexico into something strikingly different from what it is today.
