The political crisis in Israel, which has brought enormous crowds into the streets protesting the new far-right government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has become a crisis for us, too, and for people like us. We are American liberals and liberal Zionists who have always supported Israel and have always regarded American support for Israel as a point of patriotic pride.

We have always known exactly why we hold those positions. We have seen in Israel an essential refuge for oppressed and persecuted Jews who have fled to the reestablished Jewish state from Europe, Russia, the larger Middle East, Africa and beyond.…  Seguir leyendo »

Vladimir Putin may have gone out of his mind, but it’s also possible that he has merely gazed at events through a peculiar and historical Russian lens and has acted accordingly. To invade the neighbors is not, after all, a novel thing for a Russian leader to do. It is a customary thing. It is common sense. It is hoary tradition. But when he looks for an up-to-date rhetoric capable of explaining the whys of hoary tradition to himself or the world, he has trouble coming up with anything.

Après chaque grand événement inattendu, une foule d’experts et de pointures journalistiques se précipite pour affirmer haut et fort que, contrairement aux apparences, même si les pronostics étaient faux, tout était parfaitement prévisible. Ce sophisme fait force de loi et on nous explique déjà que la victoire de Donald Trump est due à des facteurs qui étaient clairement observables – la souffrance de la classe ouvrière blanche, la stagnation des salaires, les vertiges du libre-échange, les anxiétés culturelles générées par une époque multiculturelle et ses vagues d’immigration, etc. Ces explications sont plausibles. Et pourtant, à chaque étape de la candidature de Trump, personne dans la classe politique américaine n’a jamais cru à la probabilité de sa victoire.…  Seguir leyendo »
