Desde el ingreso del Reino Unido en 1973, la UE ha cambiado hasta un punto casi irreconocible. La caída del Telón de Acero trajo consigo la ampliación a dieciséis nuevos países. Se ha creado el euro y las leyes europeas regulan un amplio abanico de asuntos, desde el medioambiente a las políticas sociales. Sin duda, pertenecer a la Unión aporta al Reino Unido claras ventajas en algunos aspectos. Pero en otros ha supuesto una pérdida de soberanía nacional y más carga administrativa para las empresas, lo que ha debilitado el apoyo del pueblo británico.

Depuis le palais où il est reclus, Bachar Al-Assad ne se contente plus de faire la guerre à son propre peuple : il a lancé une démarche d’auto-réhabilitation. Dans les médias occidentaux, il tente de profiter de l’effroi suscité par les extrémistes pour se présenter en rempart contre le chaos. Certains paraissent sensibles à ce discours : face à la terreur, disent-ils, l’injustice et la dictature seraient préférables au désordre.

En réalité, Bachar représente à la fois l’injustice, le désordre et la terreur. Et nous, France et Royaume-Uni, nous disons non aux trois.

D’où notre scepticisme lorsque Bachar Al-Assad prétend accepter la proposition faite par l’envoyé des Nations unies, Staffan de Mistura : un arrêt pendant six semaines des bombardements sur la population civile d’Alep.…  Seguir leyendo »

In November 2013, after many months of negotiations, the E3+3 (France, Germany and Britain, together with the United States, Russia and China, a partnership also referred to sometimes as the P5+1) and Iran reached an interim agreement on Iran’s nuclear program. This agreement has had three main benefits.

First, it has stopped the progress of the most sensitive elements of Iran’s nuclear program. Under the Joint Plan of Action agreed to by Iran and the six partners in the talks, which are being coordinated by the European Union, Iran has ceased production of its most highly enriched uranium, limited its production of new centrifuges for enriching uranium and refrained from installing additional centrifuges.…  Seguir leyendo »

Few defence issues have excited as much passion over recent years as military "drones". Much criticism, though, is based on genuine misunderstanding or a wild misrepresentation of reality – even in the pages of prestigious newspapers. We in the Ministry of Defence have not done enough to correct these misapprehensions. I, for one, wish to put the myths to bed.

The most basic falsehood, invariably, is the use of the term "drone" – a name that conjures up images of computer-controlled machines, free from human oversight. It is a legitimate term in the right context but mostly it is used erroneously.…  Seguir leyendo »
