El domingo de Pascua, los votantes turcos, convocados a un referendo en relación con 18 enmiendas constitucionales ya aprobadas por la Asamblea Nacional, tenían ante sí una disyuntiva clara. Votar por “sí” suponía cambiar el sistema político del país y dar inicio a una nueva era en la historia turca. Más de un siglo de parlamentarismo quedaría atrás, para dar lugar a un sistema presidencial “a la turca” hecho a medida del actual gobernante, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Turquía tiene considerable experiencia en redactar constituciones, y la mayoría de los juristas consideran que estas enmiendas, que los votantes aprobaron por muy estrecho margen, son un retroceso en el mejor de los casos.…  Seguir leyendo »

The peppery smell of tear gas hung in the air of Istanbul’s Gezi Park when I walked through with my family just after midnight on Wednesday.

It was relatively quiet under the sycamore trees, a fleeting interlude between episodes of turmoil. On Tuesday, police gassed the park and cleared surrounding Taksim Square with the help of water canons, scattering thousands of panicked protesters and sending many to take refuge in the nearby Divan Hotel. Wednesday morning, defiant demonstrators would again fill the park — some objecting to a government plan to replace the trees with a shopping mall, others protesting the violence used by police, all united in their anger at Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s increasingly authoritarian style of ruling.…  Seguir leyendo »

During his recent visit to Israel, President Barack Obama pulled off a major breakthrough in relations between Israel and Turkey. After forging very close ties during the 1990s, Jerusalem and Ankara have of late gone their separate ways. The estrangement peaked as a result of Israel’s 2010 interdiction of the Mavi Marmara, a Turkish ship that was attempting to break the blockade of the Gaza Strip. The Israeli operation resulted in the death of nine activists on board the vessel. The Turkish government was incensed, and an Istanbul court went on to indict four Israeli commanders allegedly responsible for the mission.…  Seguir leyendo »
