She died in her happy place. It was a photograph of herself and Prince Philip at Balmoral, wrapped in a tartan picnic blanket beside the hills of her beloved Loch Muick, that she chose to release on the eve of his funeral last year. Balmoral is where it is said he proposed to her and where, throughout her life, she spent contented summer months unassailed, except by her own family.

I am told Her Majesty had made it quietly known that it was her hope she would die in Scotland and had increased the amount of time she spent there to better her chances.…  Seguir leyendo »

En 1953, en medio del silencio durante la coronación de la reina Isabel II en la Abadía de Westminster, Felipe Mountbatten, duque de Edimburgo, de 31 años, se quitó la corona pequeña que llevaba, se arrodilló a los pies de la joven con la que se había casado seis años antes y prestó juramento de fidelidad. “Yo, Felipe, duque de Edimburgo, me hago vuestro vasallo en cuerpo y alma y del culto terrenal… con la ayuda de Dios”.

In 1953, in the rustling, ermined silence of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey, the 31-year-old Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, removed his own coronet, knelt at the feet of the young woman he wed six years before, and swore an oath of allegiance. “I, Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, do become your liege man of life and limb and of earthly worship … so help me God.”

That Philip kept that oath for the next 68 years is a miracle not only of the modern monarchy but also of modern matrimony.
