The Olympic flag has passed to Los Angeles for the next Summer Olympics in 2028. Now the new organizers must decide whether to carry forward one of Paris 2024’s most remarkable — and unappreciated — achievements: overturning traditions first created by the Nazis for the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.

Los Angeles can return to the kind of spectacle that dominated all the Games that followed the 1936 Olympics, until this year, or it can take Paris’s anti-fascist innovations even further.
