Seguir leyendo »

Our panel of commentators give their verdict on the Muir Russell review into the hacked 'climategate' emails.

The report by Sir Muir Russell et al confirms what everybody who has worked with Phil Jones and Keith Briffa knew all along – they are honest, hard-working scientists whose reputations have been unjustifiably smeared by allegations of unscrupulous behaviour. These allegations are soundly rejected by the report.

I hope that the media will devote as much attention to this comprehensive dismissal of the allegations as it did to promoting the hysteria surrounding the email theft in the first place. Will the Daily Telegraph now retract its claim that the emails revealed "the greatest scientific scandal of our age" and apologise unreservedly to Phil Jones?…  Seguir leyendo »

Why hasn't the Deepwater Horizon spill, one of the worst ecological disasters in US history, led to a storming of the Bastille of Big Oil? Why aren't the most urgent problems of our time – environmental crises and climate change – being confronted with the same energy, idealism and optimism as past tragedies of poverty, tyranny and war? The current state of the oil industry is reminiscent of the ancien regime on the eve of the revolution.

The Gulf of Mexico disaster has many faces. BP's incompetence is one. But there is also the failure of legislative oversight. What until recently was praised as an economic stimulus policy is now being criticised as "collusion with scoundrels".…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »

It is no accident that the government has seemed paralysed in responding to the Deepwater Horizon crisis, not knowing whether or not to defend BP in the face of politicians' and public opprobrium. The reason is that it is unable to understand that the root causes of the crisis are ideological.

To blame or not blame BP is really not the point. BP must take its share of responsibility along with other US private companies involved. But the deeper lessons of the oil spill concern the future of our energy supplies, of regulation, and the shape of our society and economy.…  Seguir leyendo »

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has already been described as the biggest environmental crisis in US history. The efforts to stop the leak, repair the damage to the ecosystem and compensate those whose livelihoods depend on clean waters will come at a tremendous cost to BP. We still don’t know what the final bill will be — or how BP and its reputation will manage.

Tough questions are rightly being asked of the oil industry, but the disaster raises wider issues than the culpability of a few companies. It poses a fundamental question about whether our dependency on oil and other fossil fuels is sustainable.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »

The third “Global Biodiversity Outlook,” an assessment of the current state of the variety of life on the Earth and the implications of its continued reduction, was recently released. Not surprisingly, the outlook, prepared by the Convention on Biological Diversity, is not pretty. But it is also not all inevitable.

Few remember the first two such reports, in part because the outlook was not so grim. This report, based on national reports from 120 countries and with substantial scientific input and review, is truly hard to ignore.

The last time the nations of the world came together to deal with the state of the planet’s biology, they agreed to an overall target “to achieve a significant reduction of the current rate of global biodiversity loss.”…  Seguir leyendo »

In Tuesday’s IHT, Elisabeth Rosenthal reported that doubts on climate warming have been on the rise, especially in Britain, after a data dispute and a cold winter.

Britain, until recently a world leader in its response to climate change, now suffers a global reputation as a hotbed of skepticism.

The front page of Tuesday’s IHT cites a BBC poll which suggests that belief among Britons in manmade climate change has declined dramatically.

The report is right to blame exaggerated media coverage of climate scientists’ errors, as well as the furore over leaked e-mails at the University of East Anglia. It could also have pointed to the controversy over a British public information campaign that made “misleading” claims about the certainty of climate change damage.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »

One unadvertised consequence of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption will be a very slight delay in global climate change. The much bigger eruption of Krakatoa in 1883 threw up a cloud of ash that cut sunlight reaching the Earth by 1 per cent, produced half a decade of exceptionally cold winters worldwide and had a cooling effect on the oceans that was still apparent a century later.

All of which underlines that there are things other than reducing greenhouse gas emissions that we can do to combat the planet’s warming. Such techniques go under the collective name of geoengineering. Possibilities range from the uncontentious (growing more trees) through the implausibly difficult (painting the roofs of all buildings on the planet white or covering the deserts with aluminium foil) to the frankly futuristic (installing mirrors in space to reflect away sunlight).…  Seguir leyendo »

In planetary terms, it was just a tiny pinprick that opened up last month underneath the Eyjafjalla Glacier in southern Iceland, when a long-forgotten volcano started to erupt again after a quiescence of nearly 200 years. But insignificant though the rent in the planet’s fabric may have been, uncounted millions have been suddenly affected by it.

The North Atlantic winds shifted by just a few degrees, and all of a sudden commercial catastrophe has been visited on northern Europe: air traffic peremptorily shut down, the skies cleared of planes wary of flying through the high-altitude streams of the volcano’s brutally corrosive airborne silica dust.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »

After two years of raucous meetings at great hotels and resorts around the world, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) failed to deliver a treaty in Copenhagen in December. The clash of national interests over who would be required to cripple their economies to "save the planet" from the chimera of global warming proved insurmountable. The flawed process should have ended, but UNFCCC is pressing on. Talks will open again in Bonn on Friday, to be followed by several more negotiating junkets before a grand sequel to Copenhagen is held next December in Cancun, Mexico.

The accord reached in Copenhagen in lieu of a treaty was the best of all possible outcomes for the United States.…  Seguir leyendo »

When is an endangered species not an endangered species? When it lives in the sea, apparently. Despite continuing carnage in the ocean, marine creatures were refused any protection at the United Nations conference on trade in wildlife that ended yesterday in Doha, Qatar.

Tigers, rhinos and elephants are all better protected after the meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites). But hammerhead sharks, bluefin tuna and other marine species should be quaking in their skins. For when it comes to fish, the world has decided that scientific evidence of imminent demise is not reason enough to defend them against overexploitation.…  Seguir leyendo »
