En mi infancia, cuando el auge petrolero llegó a su máximo esplendor, pocos acontecimientos vaciaban las calles de Caracas como el concurso Miss Venezuela. El programa se transmitía en vivo desde hoteles de lujo a los que la mayoría de los venezolanos solo podían soñar con ir a tomarse un whiskycito. Las mujeres desfilaban, como un ejército, enfundadas en vestidos de noche o trajes típicos o de baño. Iban presentándolas, una por una, mencionando su nombre, edad, medidas y color de ojos. Los seguidores se sabían el himno del programa de memoria: “En una noche tan linda como esta, cualquiera de nosotras podría triunfar”.…  Seguir leyendo »

When I was growing up, in the height of the oil boom, few events emptied the streets of Caracas like the Miss Venezuela pageant. The show was broadcast live from luxury hotels most Venezuelans could only dream of entering for a whiskycito. The women stood in troop formation, sheathed in evening gowns or folkloric costumes or bathing suits. They were introduced by name, age, body measurements and eye color. Fans sang the show’s anthem by heart — “On such a lovely night as this, any one of us could triumph.”

The mission of the whole Miss Venezuela enterprise was, of course, to see the winner crowned Miss Universe.…  Seguir leyendo »
