No hubo milagro esta vez. La muerte le ha liberado de procesamientos penales que en algún momento le hubieran supuesto una cascada de sentencias en su contra. Ya no se cumplirá el sueño de verle sentado en el banquillo de los acusados escuchando la lectura de la condena judicial impuesta por cualquiera de las múltiples causas abiertas por sus delitos. Esa imagen no la van a poder vivir sus víctimas, los supervivientes de un genocidio que arruinó la larga tradición democrática de Chile. Pero el juicio de la historia y de la propia sociedad chilena en su conjunto ya le ha condenado para siempre.…  Seguir leyendo »

El final que veníamos anunciando desde hace años se precipita ya, lamentablemente, a pasos imparables: el general Pinochet, víctima de una crisis cardiaca, va a morir sin haber sido juzgado y condenado. Pocas semanas atrás el ex dictador era privado, una vez más, de su inmunidad por otro de sus múltiples delitos, esta vez por los horrores de Villa Grimaldi. Anteriormente había sido repetidamente desaforado y procesado por secuestros, torturas, asesinatos, malversación, falsificación de documentos, evasión de impuestos, y otras serie de patrióticas actividades civiles y militares, por las que había sido objeto de muy diversas causas penales acumuladas por los tribunales chilenos.…  Seguir leyendo »

Fiercely implacable exiles in Miami, perennially outfoxed bureaucrats in Washington and salivating real estate developers around the world have spent years trying to predict what will happen in Cuba the day after Fidel Castro dies. Now I think everyone knows the answer: nada.

That chuckling you hear is Fidel, in his hospital room, having the last laugh.

The 80-year-old revolutionary icon, evidently at death's door, appears to have engineered a seamless transition to the post-Fidel era. Brother Ra?l presided over last week's 50th-anniversary shindig with none of Fidel's charisma but all of his authority. Una vez más -y ya hemos perdido la cuenta-, la justicia chilena acaba de privar de su inmunidad al general Pinochet. Esta vez no ha sido por corrupción económica sino por algo mucho más grave: 23 casos de tortura y 36 de secuestro con desaparición. Con ello, también una vez más, el ex dictador volverá a ser procesado. Pero, también una vez más, ahí acabará todo. Nadie será capaz de juzgarle y condenarle. La calamitosa justicia chilena, después de haber procesado repetidamente al general en muy diversas causas penales, volverá a chocar patéticamente contra su barrera infranqueable: su penosa, radical y sistemática incapacidad para juzgarlo y condenarlo, dejando así al descubierto su verdadero propósito: que el viejo tirano muera sin haber sido condenado jamás.…  Seguir leyendo »

Dressed not in his green fatigues but in a white Adidas track suit with red and blue stripes, Fidel Castro posed for photographs -- apparently over the weekend, though it's hard to be sure -- holding up a copy of the official newspaper Granma to prove he had survived to his 80th birthday. "Absolved by History," said the front-page headline, and it was hard to read the phrase as anything but the perfect, almost inevitable, exit line.

Castro's first attempt at revolution was a raid on Santiago's Moncada barracks on July 26, 1953. Bad planning and amateurish execution led to failure, and Castro was captured and put on trial.…  Seguir leyendo »

Fidel Castro appears to have cheated death (yet again) and will celebrate his 80th birthday today. Although he has decreed that his birthday celebration will take place on Dec. 2 (the 50th anniversary of his return to Cuba from exile), he in fact came into the world, weighing 12 pounds, on Aug. 13, 1926, at 2 a.m. at his family’s estate at Birán.

In 1952, when Fulgencio Batista seized power through a military coup, Fidel Castro declined an invitation to join the regime from Rafael Díaz-Balart, a brother of his wife, Mirta, and a minister in the new government.…  Seguir leyendo »

Eran tres cuadras las que separaban aquellas dos intersecciones en la capital norteamericana, tres cuadras entre el Du Pont Circle y el Sheridan Circle que yo solía caminar a menudo en mis tiempos de exilio en Washington. De los dos Círculos, era el Sheridan Circle el que tenía mayor resonancia para mí en esa década de los ochenta, el que me llenaba de tristeza y rabia. Había sido ahí, en ese exacto Círculo, a pocos pasos de la Embajada chilena, que la policía secreta de Pinochet había asesinado, el 21 de septiembre de 1976, a Orlando Letelier, el ex ministro de Salvador Allende, y yo, como otros desterrados, pasaba por ese sitio frecuentemente, tanto para conmemorar al compañero muerto como para prometerme a mí mismo que algún día íbamos a juzgar al dictador que lo había mandado matar.…  Seguir leyendo »
