Despite the heartbreak for the Lionesses in today’s final, this Fifa Women’s Football World Cup has made compelling viewing. From the very first round, fans enjoyed a heady mix of thrilling, breathtaking skill, dramatic incidents and unexpected results, with record attendances and viewing figures at every stage of the tournament.

But it’s not just women’s football that’s enjoying momentous growth. Rugby, cricket and netball have seen record-breaking crowds this year, vast increases in TV viewing figures and new sponsorship deals, with our national women’s sides enjoying unprecedented success on the world stage – far more so than their male counterparts.

El martes 15 de agosto España se levantó ante el furor causado por la victoria de la selección nacional de fútbol femenino en el partido contra Suecia. Ganar la semifinal significaba que, por primera vez en la historia, el equipo llegaba a la final de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2023. Los principales líderes políticos de nuestro país, personajes públicos y medios de comunicación nacionales e internacionales quisieron hacerse eco de este logro.

Y es que la selección española de fútbol femenino está batiendo todos los récords de audiencia en los últimos años en las televisiones de nuestro país. As the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup enters its final knockout stages there is absolutely no doubt that this competition has elevated the women’s game to a different level, capturing the imagination of generations of women and girls who have never seen themselves represented in this way before.

Alongside all of this, the Women’s World Cup is telling the story of how women’s football is developing and thriving across the African continent, with three African countries advancing to the last 16 stages for the first time — Nigeria, South Africa and Morocco.

Morocco faces France on Tuesday. Nigeria lost to England on penalties on Monday and South Africa crashed out to the Netherlands on Saturday.…  Seguir leyendo »

As a Vietnamese American kid growing up in the United States, I did not see many soccer players who looked like me. I also never played. My Vietnamese refugee parents expected my brother and me to focus on school instead of playing sports, which they considered a distraction, a luxury our family could not afford. This is not an uncommon thought among new immigrants, especially as soccer in this country is still largely considered an elite youth sport that favors mostly White affluent kids in the suburbs, those who have the resources to succeed.

Yet, my father loved watching sports events on television, especially the World Cup and the Olympics, and he would marvel at the skills and accomplishments of elite athletes.…  Seguir leyendo »

Poco antes de que Lionel Messi subiera al escenario para levantar el trofeo de la Copa del Mundo, el emir catarí Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani puso un manto negro, llamado “bisht”, sobre los hombros del astro argentino.

Las imágenes de Messi envuelto en una tela negra, que podría haberse interpretado como que ocultaba su camiseta nacional, causaron confusión en todo el mundo. Muchos aficionados se preguntaron por qué estaba envuelto en una capa árabe, y algunos sugirieron que “arruinaba un momento icónico”.

Empecemos por el Mundial.

Escribo este artículo el día después de las semifinales en Qatar. Para los amantes del fútbol como yo (desde el sofá, me temo), ha sido una exhibición de fútbol espléndida, así como una competición emocionante y llena de sorpresas. Abundaron las euforias y las decepciones. Pensemos, por poner sólo un ejemplo, en los Leones del Atlas, que se ganaron con justicia el respeto y la admiración de los millones de personas pegadas a sus televisores. Una prueba más, si es que hacía falta alguna, de que el fútbol es mucho más que fútbol.

Whatever happens in the World Cup final this Sunday, Europe will remain the dominant power of global football. An Argentinean victory over France will not change the facts of economic globalization. The English Premier League alone usually turns over more money every season than the quadrennial World Cup, and European football towers over the rest of the world, which is why half of the players at the tournament play in just five big European leagues. Yet something will have changed, too.

Depuis des dizaines d’années, le monde arabe souffre de sa désunion. Le manque de cohésion des pays de la région, pourtant unis par la géographie, la langue et la culture, permet de longue date aux puissances étrangères de piller ses ressources. L’héritage de la stratégie coloniale du « diviser pour mieux régner » demeure prégnant et le repli sur soi empêche les Arabes d’utiliser tout le potentiel que leur confèrent leur richesse pétrolière et/ou leurs populations relativement éduquées. Qatar spared nothing in its preparation for the 2022 World Cup. Multiple stadiums and sprawling fan facilities were built from scratch—as was the national team, which includes players from Iraq, Sudan, Algeria, and Portugal, among others. Before building the World Cup facilities, Qatar invested in the massive Aspire Academy, a state-of-the-art soccer school and sports district staffed with top instructors from around the world who scout thousands of promising young players starting at age 12 from dozens of countries every year. Morocco Has Given the Arab World Something to Cheer for Again

Morocco’s stunning performance in the World Cup, its progress to a semifinal game with France and the worldwide elation it has engendered captures a special moment for Moroccans and many others from the Arab world and beyond.

This is not just your classic underdog story, a tale of global south revanchism against former colonial powers and historic adversaries, or a surge of Arab, African and Muslim pride. Beyond the memes, Morocco’s performance in this year’s World Cup points to a special moment of vulnerability, self-awareness and unguarded optimism that I have not seen in this region since the 2011 uprisings.

History is not the past. It is the present. We carry our history with us. We are our history”, wrote James Baldwin in a world that branded his Blackness as inhuman.

On Wednesday, on a field in the middle of the Middle East and on the edge of history, Morocco will embody history for itself as the first African and Arab nation to make it to the World Cup semifinals since the tournament began in 1930. Morocco’s national soccer team will face off against France, defending champion and former colonial power.

France is favored to win this match, but more importantly, a globe of people who see themselves in their players in between the boundaries of Africa and beyond the outstretched arms of the formerly colonized world will see a team announcing, fearlessly and faithfully, that we are not your inferiors.…  Seguir leyendo »

Soccer’s quadrennial World Cup, reaching its climactic stages this week in Qatar, demonstrates an inescapable, regrettable fact: “Sportswashing”, the use of athletic competition to shine up a tarnished image, almost always works.

There are good reasons Qatar should not be staging the planet’s biggest sporting event. According to the Justice Department, officials of soccer’s governing body, FIFA, were bribed to select the Persian Gulf petro-state as host. Qatar has a long record of human rights abuses, including horrific treatment of migrant construction workers, thousands of whom reportedly died building facilities for the tournament and other infrastructure. And holding the World Cup in late fall, when professional leagues are in midseason, instead of the summer — because of Qatar’s punishing heat — poses unnecessary risk of injury to the players.…  Seguir leyendo »

Those moments unwritten from the pages of history are often simply missing a stage. But for the Moroccan team taking to the field in Qatar to face off against heavily favored Spain on Tuesday, a new kind of stage was being set. The biggest football tournament, the FIFA World Cup, was unfolding in the heart of a Muslim nation. And authors adorned in red jerseys were primed to pen history with their feet instead of their hands.

It was a spiritual scene inside the stadium at Education City, Qatar. Moroccan fans whistled incessantly when Spain took possession of the ball, then erupted with deafening roars when their Atlas Lions reclaimed it.…  Seguir leyendo »

Pour les Qatariens, le 18 décembre prochain sera à marquer d’une pierre blanche : le matin, ils se rassembleront pour célébrer la fête nationale du pays ; et, le soir, ils regarderont la finale de la Coupe du monde de la FIFA. Une heureuse coïncidence qui vient couronner une stratégie vieille de deux décennies : faire du football un tremplin de choix pour l’ascension internationale – et la sécurité nationale – de l’émirat.

Mais contrairement à de nombreux autres pays – du golfe Persique à la Russie en passant par l’Asie du Sud-Est – , qui ont simplement vu dans le football un outil efficace de « soft power » ou de stimulation économique, le Qatar y voit aussi une garantie sécuritaire.…  Seguir leyendo »

A finales de octubre, Peter Tatchell, uno de los activistas por los derechos de la comunidad LGBTQ+ más conocidos a nivel internacional, montó una protesta frente al Museo Nacional de Qatar para llamar la atención sobre la criminalización de esa población en el país, que penaliza la homosexualidad con condenas de uno a tres años de cárcel. Faltaba poco menos de un mes para que comenzara el Mundial de futbol, que no solo atraería a más de un millón de visitantes, sino también la mirada de cientos de millones de aficionados.

¿Le importa realmente a los aficionados que Catar intente limpiar su imagen con el Mundial?

La elección de Catar por parte de la FIFA como sede del Mundial de Fútbol masculino de 2022 ha sido controvertida desde el primer día. Siguen surgiendo preguntas sobre la actitud de la nación en materia de derechos humanos y su trato a los trabajadores inmigrantes.

Para algunos, todo el evento ejemplifica el concepto de sportwashing o lavado de imagen deportivo, es decir, el uso del deporte como herramienta de poder blando para limpiar (y distraer) una reputación política o humanitaria turbia. Y como ejercicio de relaciones públicas, la Copa del Mundo masculina es un gran negocio. El último, organizado por otra controvertida nación anfitriona, Rusia, atrajo a 3 500 millones de espectadores en todo el mundo.…  Seguir leyendo »

Cuando nuestra última dictadura se adornaba con las primeras copas de Europa del Real Madrid, con el título continental fruto del cabezazo de Marcelino o con los éxitos de Bahamontes y Santana, yo ni siquiera llegaba a adolescente.

La primera vez que la mirada hacia el palco me amargó una gesta deportiva no fue, sin embargo, una ocasión cualquiera. Acababa de vivir in situ, en el pabellón olímpico de Los Angeles, detrás del banquillo de la selección española de baloncesto, pegado al cogote de mi amigo Antonio Díaz-Miguel, nuestro gran triunfo ante la Yugoslavia de Petrovic, Delibasic y Dalipagic, en los Juegos Olímpicos del 84.…  Seguir leyendo »

Gianni Infantino, presidente de la FIFA, ha afirmado, en unas declaraciones muy sentimentales, con ocasión del discurso inaugural del Mundial de Qatar, cómo se siente ante el polémico y éticamente cuestionable acontecimiento deportivo. “Hoy me siento qatarí, hoy me siento árabe, hoy me siento africano, hoy me siento gay, hoy me siento discapacitado, hoy me siento trabajador migrante”. Y pareciera que su declaración fuese universal, enarbolando la bandera de los oprimidos, de los desafortunados del mundo, con los que pareciera vaya a estar a partir de hoy. Pero sus palabras han comenzado con el adverbio “hoy”, y eso abre alguna otra perspectiva.…  Seguir leyendo »

Catar la sangre

No sabe uno de dónde vendrá tanto miedo reverencial a la FIFA, entidad incompatible con la transparencia y ajena a los controles que, con los habituales subterfugios almibarados propios de vacuo discurso del deporte, alberga corrupciones sin cuento. Al final le va a resultar más fácil a la comunidad internacional someter a Rusia que a la cueva de Infantino. Un tipo cuya figura imaginé mucho antes de verla, hará unos cuarenta años, cuando leí 'Gog', de Giovanni Papini. Su protagonista encarna la amoralidad y el aburrimiento. Le habrá supuesto un esfuerzo considerable al jefe del último organismo impune del mundo civilizado simular indignación cuando reprochó a algunos occidentales renuentes a la tiranía que tuvieran valores.…  Seguir leyendo »
