“Every day I was in Vietnam, I thought about home. And, every day I’ve been home, I’ve thought about Vietnam.” So said one of the millions of soldiers who fought there as I did. Change the name of the battlefield and it could have been said by one of the American servicemen coming home from Iraq or Afghanistan today. Wars are not over when the shooting stops. They live on in the lives of those who fight them. That is the curse of the soldier. He never forgets.

While the authorities say they cannot yet tell us why an Army psychiatrist would go on a shooting rampage at Fort Hood in Texas, we do know the sorts of stories he had been dealing with as he tried to help those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan readjust to life outside the war zone.…  Seguir leyendo »

El debate político comparativo de las operaciones españolas en Afganistán no favorece el clima de apoyo nacional que nuestras tropas tienen derecho a esperar, especialmente cuando su despliegue en ese teatro responde a una decisión legítima de la autoridad constituida y, desde la entrada en vigor en 2005 de la Ley Orgánica de la Defensa Nacional, cuenta con el refrendo explícito del Congreso de los Diputados. Nada que decir sobre el derecho de unos y otros a discutir de lo que quieran; no faltaba más. Tampoco se cuestiona el intento de obtener réditos políticos, si éste fuera el caso, debatiendo sobre si las actividades que desarrollan hoy las fuerzas españolas son iguales o no a las que hacían cuando fueron inicialmente desplegadas en Afganistán en 2002.…  Seguir leyendo »

In a recent speech in London, Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the top United States commander in Afghanistan, was blunt. Calling the military situation there “deteriorating,” he warned that the United States was going to have to “do things dramatically and even uncomfortably differently.” General McChrystal had already submitted a report, somehow leaked, requesting an additional 40,000 American troops. He acknowledged in his speech that in so speaking out while the issue was still under debate in the White House, he might have difficulties with his superiors.

Estrasburgo es un gran mirador del escenario europeo, así como el mando del Eurocuerpo es una singular atalaya de su dimensión militar. Desde ellos se constata con cierta pena el enorme déficit defensivo europeo, porque la ausencia de una capacidad defensiva propia, autónoma y suficiente margina a Europa en un futuro orden multipolar.

Jean Monet decía que Europa se unifica alrededor de grandes proyectos concretos. Pero en la seguridad y la defensa no se ha lanzado todavía un proyecto serio de vertebración. Y sin una sólida Europa de la defensa no habrá Europa política. ¿De quién se dice aquello de "no sabían que era imposible y lo han conseguido"? Porque si alguien se merece la cita, ésos son los insumisos que en su día vencieron al ejército. Un ejército, el heredado de la dictadura, que no tenía entre los españoles la mejor de las reputaciones, estigmatizado como estaba por haber sido uno de los puntales de la represión franquista. El movimiento antimilitarista le plantó cara pronto y, casi inconcebiblemente, terminó ganando una batalla que sólo cabía dar por perdida. Neither was glorifying war -- they hated its carnage. Last weekend, President Barack Obama, the Canadian prime minister, Stephen Harper, and the Mexican president, Felipe Calderón, met in Guadalajara to discuss the state of the continent and what to do about the drug war in Mexico. Plenty of policy makers agonize over the issue, but having lived on a military base in Mexico as the wife of a Mexican officer, I know that the biggest problem is simple — underequipped, unsupported and absurdly underpaid sailors and soldiers.

When Hillary Clinton visited eastern Congo this week, she stepped into a land of fairy-tale beauty and incredible potential. I remember vividly the day in 1982 when my incoming "class" of Peace Corps volunteers made the same trip. Eastern Congo may be the most magical place on the planet; I remember thinking it did not even belong on this planet, so surreal were its mountains, lakes, volcanoes, and lush forests and farmland.

Unfortunately, the tragedies and turmoil afflicting this area have no place in this world, either. For much of the time that Mobutu Sese Seko ruled then-Zaire, the eastern region was poor but reasonably stable.…  Seguir leyendo »

Si quisiéramos buscar dos leyes que han cambiado radicalmente nuestras Fuerzas Armadas ésas serían la Ley de Supresión del Servicio Militar Obligatorio (1999) y la Ley de la Carrera Militar (2007). La primera tuvo un impacto muy grande entre la ciudadanía y grande entre los militares. La segunda ha tenido un impacto mínimo entre los ciudadanos y muy grande entre los militares.

Sería bueno que los ciudadanos que conocen que las Fuerzas Armadas son la máxima expresión de la seguridad tuvieran curiosidad por saber cómo se está regulando su carrera. Lo que pasa es que los asuntos militares tratados en los medios de comunicación civiles suelen tener algún defecto: por ejemplo, no suelen colocar a los militares en el mismo nivel que los civiles (sigue habiendo una retórica militar ya lejana a estos tiempos) y, además, se rellenan de siglas incomprensibles que alejan al ciudadano del debate.…  Seguir leyendo »

On July 5, The Post published a letter from Martha Gillis of Springfield, whose nephew, Lt. Brian Bradshaw, was killed in Afghanistan on June 25, the day that Michael Jackson died. The letter criticized the extensive media coverage of Jackson's death compared with the brief coverage of Lt. Bradshaw's death. Among the responses was the following letter, written July 9 by an Air National Guard pilot and a fellow member of the crew that flew Lt. Bradshaw's body from a forward base in Afghanistan to Bagram Air Base. Capt. James Adair, one of the plane's pilots, asked the editorial page staff to forward the letter to the Bradshaw family.…  Seguir leyendo »

British troops in southern Afghanistan are at present counter-attacking one of the most serious Taleban offensives for some time.

Operation Panther's Claw is one of the largest air-mobile operations mounted in this region and includes more than 3,000 troops, spearheaded by soldiers from, among other units, the Royal Regiment of Scotland and 2 Mercian.

It is centred on highly manoeuvrable light infantry deployed by helicopter. While these men fight the nation's enemies, we are told that the Ministry of Defence plans further cuts to the infantry, including the units mentioned above.

El día 23 de mayo asistí, como invitado, a la reunión anual que realiza la Associació Catalana de Veterans de Sidi-Ifni, que reúne a cerca de 500 ciudadanos de Catalunya que realizaron la prestación del servicio militar en aquellas tierras africanas entre 1956 y 1968, cuando aquellos territorios pertenecían a España. Allí se encontraban personas de todos los rincones de la geografía catalana, acompañados la mayoría de sus esposas, algunos hijos y nietos. Todos ellos eran jubilados, de diferente extracción social y con un único elemento aglutinador: haber vivido su experiencia militar en tiempos difíciles y en las tierras semidesérticas de la costa occidental de Marruecos.…  Seguir leyendo »

El Día de las Fuerzas Armadas que se celebra este año en Santander es, sin duda, una fecha adecuada e idónea para que la sociedad española pueda acercarse a las preocupaciones de los miles de hombres y mujeres que las componen. Sería deseable que el conocimiento de los ciudadanos sobre las Fuerzas Armadas trascendiera los actos oficiales, los desfiles, simulacros exhibiciones y todo aquello que no invita a profundizar en estas cuestiones.

Si preguntáramos a muchos ciudadanos de uniforme sobre lo que esperan del Día de las Fuerzas Armadas su respuesta sería distinta. Con toda seguridad, querrían que sus conciudadanos conocieran otros aspectos más cercanos y reales de sus verdaderas preocupaciones y anhelos.…  Seguir leyendo »

La diferencia la marcan nuestros años de autarquía y aislamiento y el hecho de no haber sido uno de los países firmantes de la Carta de San Francisco en junio de 1945.

España nunca había realizado un esfuerzo militar tan permanente en el tiempo y con una voluntad política de implicación tan continuada como lo está haciendo en lo que se ha venido a conocer como Operaciones de Paz. Sin embargo, ese esfuerzo es poco conocido fuera de los círculos diplomáticos, militares y académicos, y la sociedad, en general, no es consciente de la trascendencia de las operaciones ni puede diferenciar su tipología o discriminar entre el papel de las fuerzas armadas y el componente civil en ellas, o sobre la doctrina que guía las operaciones y los principios morales y éticos bajos las que se afrontan.…  Seguir leyendo »

What are the Armed Forces for? As Britain exits Iraq, and Afghanistan moves to the centre of the military stage it is interesting to look back at this Government's ambitions for the Army. In 1998 the Strategic Defence Review, modified by the 2003 White Paper, was clear: “As a norm, and without causing overstretch, the Armed Forces must be capable of conducting three simultaneous and enduring operations of small to medium-scale.”

Across the Western Front, the anonymous war dead are reclaiming their names. At Fromelles scientists have begun to exhume the bodies of men cut down by German machineguns in 1916 and buried in mass graves, to try to identify them through DNA tests.

In the Red Cross archives, historians are poring over newly discovered wartime lists of the names of hundreds of thousands of dead soldiers, in the hope that those buried under blank headstones can be identified at last.

Resumen: Las Fuerzas Armadas rusas perdieron capacidad y credibilidad militar tanto fuera como dentro de la Federación Rusa desde el fin de la Guerra Fría. La falta de recursos, la corrupción y la perpetuación de las mentalidades y los hábitos soviéticos determinaron la progresiva caída de su operatividad hasta tocar fondo a finales del siglo pasado. With the nation engaged in two wars and facing a number of potential adversaries, this is no time to weaken our military. Yet if gay rights activists and their allies have their way, grave harm will soon be inflicted on our all-volunteer force.

The administration and some in Congress have pledged to repeal Section 654 of U.S. Code Title 10, which states that homosexuals are not eligible for military service. Often confused with the "don't ask, don't tell" regulations issued by President Bill Clinton, this statute establishes several reasons that homosexuality is incompatible with military service.

Si no fuera porque uno se encuentra ya curado de espanto ante el anuncio del inminente estallido de escándalos que finalmente se quedan en nada, experimentaría la tentación de afirmar que con el caso del Yak-42 la derecha de este país se ha encontrado con la horma de su zapato. En efecto, aunque haya pasado un tiempo (y cambiado la legislatura, y con ella en parte la estrategia del Partido Popular, lo que en política hace que parezca que ha transcurrido una era glaciar por entero), convendrá recordar, siquiera sea por un instante, el discurso y el monumental alboroto mediático de acompañamiento planteados hasta las elecciones pasadas por quienes mandaban sobre los que hoy se sientan en el banquillo de los acusados para rendir cuentas por el mencionado caso.…  Seguir leyendo »
