Seguir leyendo »

I had imagined being there beneath sunlight

with the procession of martyrs
using just the one thin bone
to uphold a true conviction
And yet, the heavenly void
will not plate the sacrificed in gold
A pack of wolves well-fed full of corpses
celebrate in the warm noon air
aflood with joy

Faraway place
I’ve exiled my life to
this place without sun
to flee the era of Christ’s birth
I cannot face the blinding vision on the cross
From a wisp of smoke to a little heap of ash
I’ve drained the drink of the martyrs, sense spring’s
about to break into the brocade-brilliance of myriad flowers

Deep in the night, empty road
I’m biking home
I stop at a cigarette stand
A car follows me, crashes over my bicycle
some enormous brutes seize me
I’m handcuffed eyes covered mouth gagged
thrown into a prison van heading nowhere

A blink, a trembling instant passes
to a flash of awareness: I’m still alive
On Central Television News
my name’s changed to “arrested black hand”
though those nameless white bones of the dead
still stand in the forgetting
I lift up high up the self-invented lie
tell everyone how I’ve experienced death
so that “black hand” becomes a hero’s medal of honor

Even if I know
death’s a mysterious unknown
being alive, there’s no way to experience death
and once dead
cannot experience death again
yet I’m still
hovering within death
a hovering in drowning
Countless nights behind iron-barred windows
and the graves beneath starlight
have exposed my nightmares

Besides a lie
I own nothing

For two years running, the Norwegian Nobel committee peace prize has provoked worldwide controversy. In 2009, when President Obama won, people said it was too early, that he was yet to deliver, that he was commander in chief of armies in Iraq and Afghanistan. This year's prize – to the Chinese human rights activist Liu Xioabo – has met fierce opposition from the Chinese government.

The fact that reactions have been so strong proves how significant the Nobel decisions are. These choices reflect the dynamic that underpins the whole idea of the Nobel peace prize, and show consistency in honouring people who balance realpolitik and idealism: on the one side Obama, a true practitioner of the politics of the possible; and on the other hand Dr Liu Xiaobo, the outsider with a vision.…  Seguir leyendo »

Dear President Hu Jintao,

Hope dims that you will join peace-loving governments around the world by allowing Liu Xia to travel to Oslo this week to receive the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of her husband, Liu Xiaobo. Instead, for some unfathomable reason, your government, even under the clear gaze of the world, appears to cling to the myths and denials that can only further alienate it from the people of China and the community of nations.

There is still time, however, for you to seize this opportunity. A seat on the ceremony stage Friday will be reserved for Liu Xia.…  Seguir leyendo »

We no longer live in a unipolar world. Western nations do not enjoy a monopoly on economic and political power. This is an encouraging shift and one that is bringing greater equality and prosperity to the world. With this progress, developing countries are increasingly influential and, in this regard, China reigns supreme. While China's economic and geopolitical progress over the past three decades is cause for celebration, its support for abusive regimes and the brutal force with which it crushes dissent within its own borders demonstrates that substantial reform is needed if China is to be viewed within the international community as a true leader.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »

I still remember a question on one of the numerous physics tests I took in a middle school in China. “How many people of Chinese descent have been awarded a Nobel Prize?”

I guessed four. The correct answer was six, all science prizes. Not one was still a Chinese citizen when the prize was awarded.

“Our nation’s future depends on you,” the teacher said. “No Chinese person has received the Nobel Prize while they were still Chinese.”

Like most Chinese, I think of the Nobel Prize as very different from other human rights awards, including the Congressional Gold Medal given to the 14th Dalai Lama in 2006.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »

In an article on these pages on Oct. 23 (“Why China is wrong about Liu Xiaobo”), Thorbjorn Jagland, the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, argued against the notion that supporting a Chinese dissident could worsen conditions for the opposition, asserting that silence undercuts the most basic tenets of human rights. Mr. Mahbubani continues the debate.

Singapore Max Weber once wisely stated, “It is not true that good can only follow from good and evil only from evil, but that often the opposite is true. Anyone who says this is, indeed, a political infant.” His remarks apply equally well to good intentions.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »

The Chinese authorities’ condemnation of the Nobel committee’s selection of Liu Xiaobo, the jailed political activist, as the winner of the 2010 Peace Prize inadvertently illustrates why human rights are worth defending.

The authorities assert that no one has the right to interfere in China’s internal affairs. But they are wrong: international human rights law and standards are above the nation-state, and the world community has a duty to ensure they are respected.

The modern state system evolved from the idea of national sovereignty established by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. At the time, sovereignty was assumed to be embodied in an autocratic ruler.…  Seguir leyendo »

Immediately after the imprisoned writer Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this month, for more than two decades of pursuing democratic change in China, the Chinese government responded by calling him a criminal and accusing the Nobel Committee of blasphemy. It sent security agents to the Beijing apartment of his wife, Liu Xia, took away her mobile phone and placed her under house arrest. We have seen this before: in the dark days of apartheid, under the long shadow of the Iron Curtain. Whenever we took a small step toward securing the freedom of our people, we were stripped of our own.…  Seguir leyendo »

Seguir leyendo »
