If you’ve donated clothing to a local charity or tossed your stained shirts in a drop-off bin, chances are your discarded items will be dumped in Africa, winding up in landfills, water and eventually breaking down into microplastics. Your castoff T-shirt will be among millions of items harming human health, marine life and local economies. In 2021, the United States was the leading exporter of secondhand clothing, according to United Nations data, and Africa was one of the main destinations for these goods. The intention is for vendors to sell at African markets, but the quality of the used clothing — referred to as mitumba — is often so poor and soiled that the items are dumped or burned as fuel.…  Seguir leyendo »

France’s new bill targeting the environmental impact of fast fashion, which won unanimous parliamentary approval, would add a surcharge of €5 on any fast fashion item and ban advertising by certain companies. While this sounds high for a tax, cheap clothes carry heavy hidden costs, with negative impacts on health, climate and conflict.

The global trade and production of textiles contributes 6-8 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions and creates 92 million tonnes of waste. Like other major export sectors, such as food and mining, fashion is also having an outsized impact on water – largely in water-scarce and climate-vulnerable regions of the world.…  Seguir leyendo »

L’industrie textile s’interroge sur son avenir post-COP28

À la suite d’une 28e Conférence des Nations unies sur les changements climatiques (COP28) marquée par un accord en faveur de la « transition » vers des énergies non fossiles, le secteur textile se retrouve un peu malgré lui sur le devant de la scène, éclairé par les feux d’une transformation à venir. Actuellement, 70 % des fibres et des teintures synthétiques dépendent de la pétrochimie. Ces questions — et les solutions possibles — soulèvent des points d’interrogation cruciaux.

L’activiste irano-américaine Sophia Kianni, élue figure influente pour le climat en 2023 par Women’s Wear Daily, fait trembler l’industrie textile avec sa campagne virale en exigeant des actions concrètes pour une mode écoresponsable.…  Seguir leyendo »

Soy trabajadora temporal en un almacén de una gran tienda online. Cinco días a la semana, de pie en un puesto con contenedores amarillos rebosantes de ropa devuelta, gano 18,75 dólares por hora. Mi trabajo es determinar —en menos de dos minutos— si la prenda se puede volver a poner a la venta.

Miro si tienen rasgaduras o manchas y si faltan botones. Compruebo si los trajes de baño conservan el adhesivo de protección higiénica. Les doy la vuelta a las mangas de los suéteres por si están descosidas o tienen restos de desodorante. Volteo los zapatos para ver si las suelas están sucias, y con cuidado meto la mano enguantada en ellos.…  Seguir leyendo »

La Fondation Cartier est l’une des premières à avoir ouvert le bal en organisant avec succès l’exposition « Beauté Congo » en 2015. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed decades-old risks, while creating new ones, in the global textile industry relating not only to the disastrous environmental impacts of garments but also geopolitical tensions impacting resource supply. However, the circular economy can potentially provide solutions to mitigate these risks but the transition will need to involve new governance mechanisms and incorporate just transition principles in order to be successful.

The global textile industry is one of the largest polluters in the world taking a disastrous toll on the environment in terms of chemical loads to water resources, pesticide use in cotton farming, waste generation at the end-of-life stage and more.…  Seguir leyendo »

Bangladesh’s ready-made garment manufacturers are struggling to survive. Seven years after the Rana Plaza collapse, garment business owners wonder whether their new, gleaming factories will ever start their machines again. Margins were already dipping, and pressure on new compliance regulations already made it extremely difficult for all the manufacturers. The labor safety discourse revolved around the suction piping arrangements, water supply, and fire protection in factories. Many global brands source their labor from Bangladesh, including Walmart, H&M, Gap, Target, and Marks & Spencer, just to name a few. Bangladesh is second only to China in terms of exporting ready-made goods.

Mosammot Bulbuli es una joven que forma parte de los millones de trabajadores de las fábricas de Bangladés, unos establecimientos que abastecen de ropa al resto del mundo.

También es una de las miles de personas que estaban trabajando en el edificio Rana Plaza en Savar hace cinco años, cuando colapsó. Más de 1100 trabajadores perdieron la vida; más de 2000 resultaron heridos.

Los sobrevivientes narran el momento de la misma manera: la luz se fue durante los primeros minutos del turno de la mañana; a continuación, se activaron los generadores con mucho ruido; luego se sacudieron los muros; se empezó a desmoronar el techo, y se cayó.…  Seguir leyendo »

Hace cuatro años, el letal colapso de la fábrica de prendas de vestir Rana Plaza en Bangladesh dejó en evidencia las prácticas de empleo de este sector global. Habríamos esperado que la tragedia, en la que murieron más de 1100 trabajadores (el accidente más mortífero en la historia de esta industria) produjera un cambio significativo a un negocio que por largo tiempo había sido dejado a sus propios medios. Lamentablemente, lo que hemos investigado sugiere que ha ocurrido lo opuesto.

Los medios de comunicación destacan las constantes transgresiones de este sector en Bangladesh, en particular la persistencia del uso de mano de obra infantil.…  Seguir leyendo »
