El año 2013 marca una década desde que América Latina y el Caribe cambiaran dramáticamente para bien.

Luego de décadas de estancamiento, la región inició una rápida transformación económica y social en 2003 que sacó a 73 millones de personas de la pobreza, expandiendo la clase media en más del 50% o 50 millones de personas.

Según nuestros datos, hoy día hay más latinoamericanos viviendo en la clase media que en la pobreza. Esto, sin incluir a quienes se ubican en la clase vulnerable, o clase media baja, con una mayor probabilidad de caer en la pobreza.

Ciertamente los millones de personas que mejoraron su situación pueden dar fe de que no solo los ricos se beneficiaron del crecimiento económico.…  Seguir leyendo »

Economic and social development have emerged as the twin pillars of Latin America’s strategy to create a more equitable, modern society. After decades of struggling to find the right balance between growth and equality, the region has leaped forward, lifting more than 73 million out of poverty while increasing wealth, posting growth rates of 4 percent on average and becoming a source of stability in the midst of global uncertainty.

These tremendous gains, however, could be at risk if they are not made environmentally sustainable. To do so the region is grappling with the tradeoffs resulting from the need of continued growth to fight poverty and preserving natural resources for the productive use of future generations.…  Seguir leyendo »

As Cartagena’s Sixth Summit of the Americas revs up, Latin America will join the hemisphere-wide gathering boasting a unique position on the global stage — a stark contrast with the previous gathering in Trinidad and Tobago, almost three years ago.

Then, it was feared that the global financial crisis of 2009 — one the region had no part in — would wipe out many social and economic gains amassed in the previous decade, the result of sound economic decisions and policies.

As it turned out, none of that happened, especially in South America. The region emerged from the global turmoil mostly unscathed and today it is in prime position to tackle the challenges that can potentially get in the way of a continuing growth path with opportunities for all.…  Seguir leyendo »
