The only thing to be said against Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, coming top in the Forbes list of the 100 most powerful women in the world is the nature of the list itself. Just think about it. Power isn’t like tennis: why should women be hived off into a separate little power category all of their own?

In any list of the most powerful people on earth, Merkel would be right up there with the men: her fellow German the Pope, and not far behind Barack Obama in terms of the list’s criteria of career accomplishments, economic clout and public profile.…  Seguir leyendo »

Rachida Dati, the French Justice Minister, has not won many friends among women this week, at least, not among right-thinking women. Not only did she return to work five days after having a baby - by Caesarean section - she was characteristically svelte for her Cabinet meeting: dark, manicured nails, spindly black heels, a jacket with leopard-print lining, the works.

The newspaper Le Figaro, ungallantly pointed out that she has a bit of a tummy, but it's hardly noticeable. Miss Dati has declared that she has no ambitions to be a role model for women. Just as well.

She is a controversial figure in many ways but quite her most revolutionary decision has been to reject the universal pieties about giving birth.…  Seguir leyendo »

We’re still at it. No fewer than 130 days since the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, the subject animates dinner parties, gets women talking to each other in the street, provokes rows within families. The returning home of the McCanns is just the most recent twist in a story which has, to an extraordinary extent, taken us over. It’s something we all have an opinion about. For four months there’s hardly been a day when the McCanns have been out of the news. And the suspicion that the Portuguese police are attempting to convert the McCanns from victims into villains has turned sympathy to downright partisanship.…  Seguir leyendo »

Of all the bogeys you might have thought well and truly nailed in the past decade or so, the population control movement seemed most obviously to have a stake through its heart. At a time when we – I mean, anyone over 35 – are all horribly conscious that there won’t be enough taxpayers to support us in gin and cigarettes in our old age, the very last thing we need to worry about is excess population growth. On the contrary: as seen from the dinner party circuit, the real crisis is the difficulty for female graduates in getting anyone to breed with.…  Seguir leyendo »
