Cuando en 1988, las primeras 197 mujeres atravesaron el arco de la entrada principal de la Academia de Cabos y Guardias de Baeza, muchas eran plenamente conscientes de la enorme trascendencia de este hecho histórico. Pero, desde luego, lo que ninguna de ellas pensaba era que una de las primeras cuestiones a las que se enfrentarían sería a una camiseta: una camiseta blanca, deportiva, de tirantes, de la uniformidad de educación física que no había sido diseñada en ningún caso para la anatomía femenina.

Sitting cross-legged on the floor of a sparsely decorated Kabul apartment, the young, bubbly woman told me why she lies to her neighbors.

She tells them she’s a nurse when they inquire, as they always do. She leaves the house in civilian clothes and changes into her crisp uniform only when she’s on base. This Afghan woman in her 20s, who asked that her name not be used for her safety, is part of a small, brave group of women serving in Afghanistan’s security forces. If her neighbors found out, she says, they’d surely kill her.

Sixteen years into a controversial United States-led war in Afghanistan — one billed in part as a mission to liberate Afghan women — the United States is pouring millions of dollars into bolstering the ranks of women in the police, the army and other branches of the security forces.…  Seguir leyendo »

Hoy no comerá en casa con toda la familia, porque, mientras nosotros celebramos la Navidad, ella está en la calle patrullando. Estamos en nivel 4 de alerta antiterrorista. Eso significa que hay lugares potencialmente vulnerables que necesitan protección. Cientos de policías de toda España se movilizan, a veces abandonando su lugar de residencia para prestar servicio en otra provincia. Vigilan aeropuertos, estaciones, puertos, zonas comerciales, calles turísticas. Unas veces los vemos claramente con sus uniformes y nos asustan sus armas, sus chalecos antibalas, pero otras solo los avezados los perciben, porque van de paisano confundidos entre los viandantes, atentos a cada movimiento.…  Seguir leyendo »

Like thousands of other female applicants to Indonesia's National Police, 24-year-old Sari (not her real name) submitted to the mandatory "virginity test" that the authorities require women -- but not men -- to take as part of the application process.

In a police hospital in the city of Makassar in 2008, Sari says that she and 20 other fellow police recruits were told to undress, lie down on a table and allow a physician to perform a "two-finger test."
