Seguir leyendo »

Soldiers walk amid destroyed Russian tanks in Bucha, in the outskirts of Kyiv, on April 3. (Rodrigo Abd/AP, File)

Less than a week into Ukraine’s latest counteroffensive against Russian forces, there’s a natural desire to pronounce success or failure, but the nature of the fighting and the fog of war don’t allow that. It’s simply too soon to tell whether Ukraine will, in the swaggering language of President Volodymyr Zelensky, drive Russia beyond his nation’s borders.

In the larger picture, however, the fact that Ukraine is counterattacking in organized, well-supplied columns is another mark of Russia’s costly and disastrous failure. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s self-made war was intended to decapitate Ukraine, occupy the capital and install a puppet government in a single multi-front blitz this past February.…  Seguir leyendo »

In April, just weeks after he launched the invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin maintained that the West could never strangle Russia’s economy. The barrage of American and European sanctions had not succeeded and would not succeed in bringing his country to its knees. “We can already confidently say that this policy toward Russia has failed”, he told his officials. “The strategy of an economic blitzkrieg has failed”.

Such defiant posturing can be expected of Putin and other Russian leaders. But now, six months after the beginning of the war and the imposition of sanctions, many observers are questioning whether Western sanctions have had the tough effects their architects promised.…  Seguir leyendo »

Snow in Paris, February 2018. Gonzalo Fuentes / Reuters

As the European summer draws to a close, almost all EU countries are facing some form of energy crisis. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU joined the United States and others in leveling sanctions and embargoes on Russian natural gas, even though many EU countries depend on imports of Russian energy. These measures have compounded skyrocketing prices, sharply raising the cost of living for many Europeans. Some European governments have already sought to reduce energy consumption—for instance, by limiting the use of air conditioning in public buildings and requiring shops to turn their lights off overnight. But the crisis will only get worse.…  Seguir leyendo »

In so many ways, the world we know today would not be the same without Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the former Soviet Union who died at the age of 91 on Tuesday.

It is not impossible to think that communism might still reign in the eastern half of Europe. The Soviet Union might have been held together as a single, deeply troubled, increasingly impoverished nation, rather than today's 15 more-or-less sovereign states. The Kremlin could quite possibly still be locked in an increasingly dangerous nuclear arms race with Washington.

But Gorbachev set the stage for a dramatic change of direction for the two superpowers of the day, one that might never have taken place without so many elements of his rich and textured life converging during his six years in power.…  Seguir leyendo »

Chileans will come to the polls to approve or reject a proposed new constitution on September 4th. It was drafted by a 155-member convention elected after the unrest—politely referred to as the Estallido Social, or ‘social outbreak’—that erupted in the country in late 2019. Many of its proponents argued that it would be an ecological constitution. But the truth is the opposite: if the draft is approved, Chile’s ability to protect the environment and to contribute to the global fight against climate change will be seriously damaged.

The most important complaints voiced by Chileans during the ‘social outbreak’ concerned inadequate pensions, inequality and abuses, such as cases of corruption, by the elite.…  Seguir leyendo »

Helmuth von Moltke, the chief of staff for the Prussian army, once made the astute observation that no war plan survives “first contact” with a hostile force. If there was ever a war to validate that claim, it’s the one currently churning in Ukraine. As the conflict in Europe’s largest country marks its six-month anniversary on Wednesday, 24 August, the main protagonists have all experienced their fair share of jolted assumptions, operational mistakes, and misplaced beliefs about what is and isn’t possible. Inflated expectations have been punctured, hopes have been dashed, and strategies crafted to cause the enemy discomfort instead produced unintended consequences that are just as painful.…  Seguir leyendo »

I Was Onstage With Salman Rushdie That Day, and What I Saw Was Remarkable

Violence against writers was the topic I was about to interview the novelist Salman Rushdie about at the Chautauqua Institution on Aug. 12. We were being introduced onstage when out of nowhere, like a scene from Mr. Rushdie’s novel “Shalimar the Clown”, a knife-wielding man rushed onto the stage and began to stab him.

Immediately audience members ran to the stage to defend him.

It was a remarkable response. That rush of people leaping from their seats was the opposite of the so-called “bystander effect”, when individuals do nothing, relying on others to help. I would call it “the reader effect”.…  Seguir leyendo »
