Un mismo combate

Hace unas semanas nuestra Joana Bonet escribió algo que me llamó la atención en su columna de La Vanguardia. Criticando con sus buenos modales las primeras medidas antiturísticas y antipijísticas de la alcaldesa Colau aseguraba: "Hoy, la devaluación de la palabra turista es radical. Los capitalinos, y en especial los barceloneses, se sienten invadidos por la horda que ha tomado las calles, los monumentos y las tiendas de lujo". Yo creo que fueron las palabras capitalinos y horda las que en realidad me movieron. Allí puestas eran como muy Galinsoga y azuzaron mi seguridad de que "la devaluación de la palabra turista" no era cosa de hoy.…  Seguir leyendo »

Conciencia y reputación

En su excelente libro Las buenas conciencias, el novelista mexicano Carlos Fuentes recogió una lúcida apreciación que en el texto atribuye a Emmanuel Mounier, aunque originariamente es de Nietzsche: “Nos las arreglamos mejor con nuestra mala conciencia que con nuestra mala reputación”; una cuestión que sale de nuevo a la luz recientemente en trabajos como el del colombiano Juan Gabriel Vásquez Las reputaciones.

Parecen enfrentarse en estos casos dos formas de saber acerca de nosotros mismos: la opinión que nos desvela nuestra propia conciencia y la valoración de los demás. Y llevaba razón Nietzsche al afirmar que, salvo casos excepcionales, que siempre los hay, a las personas de a pie, a las empresas, a los partidos políticos y a sus líderes, les importa bastante más la reputación que lo que ellos pueden pensar acerca de sí mismos.…  Seguir leyendo »

Mire a su alrededor y detenga usted su mirada en la primera persona que encuentre que no pertenezca a su familia o a su círculo de confianza. Párese un instante a reflexionar sobre las capacidades, motivaciones y cualidades, sobre los recuerdos y experiencias que forman su personalidad, sobre los deseos y anhelos que pueblan el caleidoscopio de su corazón infinito. Sea generoso y esforzado en su valoración, evalúe con ánimo dispuesto sus arrugas, sus cicatrices, visibles o invisibles, y atesore el sentimiento inevitable de ternura derivado de su análisis. Ahora deje pasar unos minutos. Aunque los resultados positivos en materia económica y social están aún lejos de visualizarse, la actuación exterior del presidente parece satisfacer a los franceses. Las encuestas muestran que si bien no están contentos en el primer punto, dan un buen resultado al Ejecutivo en el segundo. Los franceses apreciaron la actitud del presidente después de los atentados del 7, 8 y 9 de enero del 2015. Laurent Fabius, ministro de Asuntos Exteriores, y Jean-Yves Le Drian, ministro de Defensa, son, por otra parte, los ministros más populares. Aunque esto le sirve de poco consuelo a François Hollande, ya que es principalmente en cuestiones económicas y sociales donde se jugará su posible reelección en el 2017.…  Seguir leyendo »

Iran’s imprisonment of Jason Rezaian is an affront to justice

Jason Rezaian must be acquitted and freed immediately. As the final hearing in the Iranian trial of The Post’s Tehran correspondent was brought to a close Aug. 10, the international community waits for a verdict.

Rezaian is an American Iranian journalist working for one of the most respected media organizations in the world. Iran has now illegally detained an innocent man for 13 months.

His arrest by Revolutionary Guards was arbitrary and illegal, taking place in the middle of the night with no indication of the charges brought against him until months later. The conditions of his detention at Evin Prison are also illegal.…  Seguir leyendo »

When Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives for a state visit in Washington next month, will President Obama press him to improve China’s disturbing record on torture in detention?

If so, Xi might point to the case of Nian Bin, who was released last year through a rare exoneration after spending eight years on death row in China, convicted of a crime he did not commit on the basis of a confession that he says was obtained through torture. On Jan. 2, 2013, my mother, two brothers and I got into the taxi and left Kabul just after 1 a.m. At 3:20 a.m. our driver slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting the men who suddenly appeared in the middle of the dark road. I could see the silhouettes of the Afghan turbans, the signature dress of Taliban militia. A young man, barely in his 20s, with a long beard, approached the car and peered in.

My facial features, especially my flatter nose, give me away as a Hazara, an ethnic minority in Afghanistan despised by the Taliban. I pretended I could not understand the Talib’s questions to our driver, trying to appear uneducated.…  Seguir leyendo »

Tianjin is an important industrial port in northern China, about a half-hour ride from Beijing on the new high-speed rail line. The government’s recently announced plan for a northern megacity to better coordinate trade and growth has Beijing and Tianjin at its core. About 100 Fortune 500 companies have investments in the city. Tianjin is seen as the shape of things to come in the new China.

Then on the night of Aug. 12, a series of huge blasts at a hazardous-materials warehouse owned by Rui Hai International Logistics killed more than 100 people and shattered that dream. The Jeremy Corbyn phenomenon may be as baffling for those who follow British politics as the Donald J. Trump phenomenon is to those who keep an eye on American politics. Both were regarded as joke candidates when they first entered their respective leadership races. But both have emerged as front-runners, to great consternation in their parties.

More than the width of the Atlantic separates Mr. Corbyn and Mr. Trump — in terms of both politics and personality. But the emergence of the two tells us something about the character of politics today.
