Cameroonians head to the polls Sunday to reelect Paul Biya as president — a foregone conclusion despite the country’s acute crisis. In the north, the government is still engaged with the terrorist group Boko Haram, while a devastating uprising in English-speaking areas in the northwest and southwest has enveloped the country’s politics.

Biya, age 85, has been in power for an incredible 36 years. He will win these elections — but not because he is the most popular candidate. Rather, Cameroon is one of Africa’s most enduring electoral authoritarian regimes. While multiparty elections exist on paper, these elections are not free and fair and are tilted in the regime’s favor.…  Seguir leyendo »

With a turnout of less than 40 per cent, the result of the referendum on whether to approve a change of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’s (FYR Macedonia) official name to the Republic of North Macedonia is a setback for the country’s government. It had hoped to use approval of the change to normalize relations with Greece and clear a major obstacle to FYR Macedonia’s pursuit of EU and NATO membership.

Less than 180 days to go and the pressure is on. Talks between the UK and the EU are at deadlock, with the intractable Irish border problem the biggest stumbling block. But here’s the catch: they must also set aside time for the deal to be reviewed and ratified by both sides.

In the United Kingdom, parliament must vote through the withdrawal agreement into law, while on the European side, it must receive the support from member states and the European parliament.

Will China Hack the U.S. Midterms?

President Trump recently accused the Chinese of interfering in American politics ahead of the midterm elections. “They do not want me or us to win because I am the first president to ever challenge China on trade,” he said, addressing the United Nations Security Council. He provided no evidence, and appeared to be complaining mostly about retaliatory tariffs by the Chinese government, which may hurt constituencies that support him, and an advertorial touting U.S.-China trade in an Iowa newspaper.

In a speech to the Hudson Institute on Thursday, Vice President Mike Pence doubled down on the accusation, arguing that China “has initiated an unprecedented effort to influence American public opinion, the 2018 elections and the environment leading into the 2020 presidential elections.”…  Seguir leyendo »

Aquí pasó Carlomagno tres años, Napoleón tres días y Carlos V tres meses que marcarían la historia de Europa, ya que durante esa estancia fue concebido Juan de Austria. En la triangular plaza de Haid, corazón histórico de la ciudad, aún se encuentra en pie y gozando de buena salud el nido del amor imperial, el hotel donde solía alojarse el emperador en las escasas visitas que hizo a la ciudad.

Diez años después de la quiebra de Lehman Brothers, hito central de la crisis financiera, nos encontramos con una Europa atravesada por la desigualdad. Las denominadas políticas de austeridad y de reforma estructural y los rescates a la gran banca europea la han llevado hasta cotas históricas, situando la fractura social en el epicentro de la crisis económica y política.

La concentración de la renta y la riqueza, que, conviene no olvidar, estuvo en el origen de la crisis, lejos de disminuir no ha dejado de crecer. La pendiente autoritaria por la que están deslizándose los Gobiernos de algunos de los países más poderosos del mundo ha vuelto a poner sobre la mesa el viejo problema de la compatibilidad, o la incompatibilidad, entre la libertad y el conocimiento de la verdad. Por descontado, el debate político se refiere a los cursos de acción ante hechos contrastados. Manipular estos hechos, falseándolos o negándolos, constituye un atentado contra la democracia, porque los cursos de acción que se puedan decidir a partir de la regla de las mayorías y las minorías solo reflejarán el interés último, y normalmente espurio, de quien haya falseado previamente las premisas.…  Seguir leyendo »

En el confuso panorama político que estamos viviendo me ha llamado positivamente la atención que el PP haya dado muestras de querer enfrentarse de una manera constructiva a un problema que no deja de ser grave, aunque permanezca prácticamente oculto a la opinión pública. Me refiero a las recientes declaraciones del presidente del PP, Pablo Casado, en el sentido de que piensan proponer una ley que se centre en la protección a las embarazadas para darles el mayor apoyo posible, de forma que puedan seguir adelante con la gestación, sin ningún tipo de presión. Todo lo que tiene que ver con la maternidad se ha venido abordando desde un punto de vista muy negativo, reduciéndolo a la legislación sobre el aborto, que es, en esencia, un modo muy traumático de acabar con la maternidad.…  Seguir leyendo »

El premio Nobel de la Paz de 2018 me ha producido una alegría inmediata y una satisfacción muy profunda. Llegué al Parlamento Europeo en 2014, y desde el principio fui consciente de la importancia del premio Sájarov a la libertad de conciencia, que concede la Eurocámara. Tiene un gran alcance simbólico y político, sólo por detrás, precisamente, del Nobel. Por eso he dedicado mucho trabajo, esfuerzo e influencia a promover a los candidatos que, en mi opinión, más lo merecían. En 2014 apoyé al doctor Denis Mukwege y en 2016 a la yazidí Nadia Murad. Ambos ganaron el Sájarov y ambos han sido galardonados este año con el Nobel de la Paz.…  Seguir leyendo »

Compared to the established democracies of the West, Taiwan’s is still in its infancy. It did not become a full democracy until 1992, and it only held its first direct presidential election in 1996. And yet, Taiwan’s young democracy has made rapid progress, through social movements, representative politics, the judicial process and now, through direct democracy. In the beginning of this year, it rolled out one of the most citizen-friendly systems for ballot initiatives and referendums, giving its citizens more say than ever in the country’s future.

For weeks, the world watched anxiously as Syrian government troops prepared a bloody offensive against the rebel stronghold of Idlib. At the last minute, however, Russia and Turkey — meeting in Iran — announced a deal to create a demilitarized zone in the area and demand that “extremist” rebels leave. With this deal accepted by the Syrian government and the opposition, it appears that the people of Idlib have been granted a reprieve.

While hardly a permanent solution, the deal highlights the shifting international relations of the region. Since the Arab Spring uprooted long-standing regimes, international order in the Middle East has been in constant flux.…  Seguir leyendo »

Les « extrêmes » seraient-ils en passe de gouverner le Brésil ? A lire l’avis de certains éditorialistes de la presse brésilienne, les deux candidats en tête des sondages, Jair Bolsonaro et Fernando Haddad, seraient « blanc bonnet » et « bonnet blanc ». En raison de leur manque d’engagement supposé vis-à-vis des institutions et des valeurs démocratiques, ils constitueraient l’incarnation de deux expressions d’un extrémisme politique similaire.

Dans ce contexte, faire le choix dès à présent du candidat de l’extrême droite, M. Bolsonaro, afin de faire barrage au Parti des Travailleurs (PT, gauche) de l’ancien président Lula, serait une solution acceptable, notamment aux yeux des milieux financiers, d’une partie de la classe politique, et plus généralement, des élites du pays.…  Seguir leyendo »

Le 19 août 1989, non loin de la petite ville hongroise de Sopron, à la frontière avec l’Autriche, des représentants des sociétés civiles de l’Est et de l’Ouest organisèrent sur un pré, à quelques mètres des fils barbelés et des miradors, un «pique-nique paneuropéen»; un rendez-vous champêtre dans l’espoir de mettre fin, à travers de petits gestes symboliques, à la division née de la guerre froide.

Première et modeste concession du gouvernement communiste de Budapest, le déjeuner sur l’herbe fut exceptionnellement autorisé. C’était sans compter l’irruption des milliers de personnes, principalement des citoyens de l’Allemagne de l’Est alors en vacances dans le «pays frère», qui décidèrent de s’inviter à ce rassemblement inédit puis qui, une fois sur place, se mirent en marche en direction de la ligne démarcation, décidés à rompre pacifiquement le rideau de fer érigé après la guerre.…  Seguir leyendo »

Last week I interviewed Colombian President Iván Duque, who took office in August and calls himself a man of the “extreme center”. In an era of rising populism, I asked, how should politicians make the case for reviving or strengthening centrist-style politics?

“When you see a populist”, Duque answered, “you always see a demagogue.
